  • CMD Adv-Trainer Cecil Burch's Mississippi CMD Seminar
Reports From The Monkey Field: CMD Advanced-Trainer Cecil Burch's Mississippi CMD Seminar Recently, I had the chance to give a seminar on the CMDP, as well as BJJ at a BJJ gym in Mississippi. I thought it might be of interest to write about the experience. I was brought in by a law enforcement officer whose Internet name is SouthNarc. SN is a pretty well known firearms and tactics instructor who also runs his department’s SWAT team. He has some DVD’s out that are considered must haves by many people. His moniker derives from the days when he was an undercover narcotics officer and needed to remain somewhat anonymous. For the curious, you can check out his work at www.shivworks.com. SN has been a very big fan of CM for sometime. He attended a previous seminar I did in Tulsa, OK. Since then, he has been working the guys at the BJJ gym he trains at in the CM that he has been exposed to. It is a straightforward BJJ gym, but some of the athletes there have been fighting in MMA events, so they have been in real need of solid striking and clinch mechanics. SN has been convinced that...

  • US Army Special Forces Head Trainer On CMD!
As the head trainer for one of the US Army Special Forces Groups I have always looked for functional systems that either condition operators and instill the warrior spirit and combat related attributes or those that have direct technical application to the mission sets needed ‘down range’. To find a system that has both is a rare find and something that I immediately recognized in the Crazy Monkey Defense (CMD) as something we NEEDED to add to our foundation of base skills. While many criticize the validity of training empty hand skills or ‘Unarmed Combatives' for modern Military applications, I feel that there is a general lack of understanding of the applicability of many of the skills both indirectly through skills and mindset development gained from sparring and directly through the CMD defense, it’s emphasis on stance/structure, and clinch work. Although an operator may not find himself ‘boxing’ opponents regularly in a combat environment, (as critics point out) we do put ‘hands on’ on every mission. It’s during these times, transporting detainees from a target to a vehicle, controlling non-combatants, or putting flex cuffs on, etc, that situations can go south and force escalation is required. Those who have...

  • Awarded a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
I was awarded a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt from Chris Haueter (http://www.combatbase.com/) this morning. I first learned about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1995. I began seriously training in Hawaii in 1998 with Joao Morias (http://www.newlifebjj.com/joao.html) . Shortly after Joao left the United States in 2003 to return to Brazil I returned to the mainland and began training with Chris who has been my coach ever since. I feel honored to have my coach recognize me as a Black Belt. It has been close to eleven years of dedicated training and a lot of hard work. Through the process I have had days where I felt victorious and days where I felt completely heart broken. It has taken a great deal of sacrifice, a lot of perseverance, patients and effort and it has been a lot of fun all at the same time. Overall it has been an incredible experience. As a Black Belt I feel more like I'm sitting at the bottom of a new mountain that I have to start climbing now rather than at the top of the one I just finished getting up. I want to thank everyone who has taken time to train with me over the years each of you have been a part of this in someway and I am grateful for that....
