The End of An Era Print E-mail

14337_201892162543_714022543_3098455_7582865_nI spent a considerable number of years learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the Pupukea Recreation Center, a large bungalow on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii just before reaching Waimea Bay. I remember training there every week and hearing the thunder of the Hawaiian winter surf crash behind us while I began to grasp the subtleties of Jiu-Jitsu. After training in class I would often walk outside and just look at the ocean. When I first began learning Jiu-Jitsu at Pupukea I had to ride the bus from BYU Hawaii for almost 40 min. just to get there, then after training I would wait an hour to take the 40 min. bus ride back. Soon after working as a Janitor for several months cleaning toilets at school I was able to buy a car for five hundred dollars to drive up to Pupkea to train. By the time I finished my undergraduate degree I had a nice truck that I would make the 20-30 min trip in each day to get to training. It was a special time of complete discovery, creativity and new learning. December 15th 2009 received photos from Hawaii and the Pupukea Recreation Center is no more. It makes me sad to think I will never have the opportunity to train there again or re-live the days past. It's the story of life, it moves on, time passes and the only thing that is certain is that things will change. People will come and go and do whatever but I'm still doing Jiu-Jitsu all these years later and loving it just as much as ever.

Sam Kressin Awarded a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Print E-mail
bjjpromotion005Sept. 12th 2008. Sam Kressin was awarded a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt from Chris Haueter. Sam first learned about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1995. He began seriously training in Hawaii in 1998 with Joao Morias. Shortly after Joao left the United States in 2003 to return to Brazil Sam returned to the mainland and began training with Chris who has been his coach ever since.

When asked about receiving his Black Belt Sam said;

“I feel honored to have my coach recognize me as a Black Belt. It has been close to eleven years of dedicated training and a lot of hard work. Through the process I have had days where I felt victorious and days where I felt completely heart broken. It has taken a great deal of sacrifice, a lot of perseverance, patients and effort and it has been a lot of fun all at the same time. Overall it has been an incredible experience.”

“I want to thank everyone who has taken time to train with me over the years each of you have been a part of this in someway and I am grateful for that. It truly is the relationships and connections I've made with people through this over the years that I value the most. I have to thank my wife who has shown nothing more than full support for my involvement with Jiu-Jitsu.”
