I can still remember my early days as a white belt. I trained so hard in hopes of mastering Jiu-Jitsu. I would show up for class every day, sometimes even twice a day! I remember the emotions that came after I had put in over a year of training and close to a thousand hours in class and it not being enough. It didn't matter how hard I had tried, how much effort I had made. Basic positions confused me and any form of help seemed to evade me. During those times, I often felt a storm of emotions inside me. I felt frustrated, upset even angry because I was stuck in a system that was not allowing me to succeed.
The problem wasn't me. In fact, it wasn't the fault of my fellow class members or even the fault of my instructor. The problem was, and to this day still is, that the traditional “technique led” system of teaching and learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is simply ineffective. This is the most popular, commonly used teaching method for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the world and yet, it is not working. I will explain why this is, but first let’s take a look at the tenets of this antiquated system.
I call it the “technique led” approach and it has three basic proponents:
- First, the instructor shows a technique. Everyone in the class watches it.
- Second, the class breaks into pairs practices exactly what their instructor showed them. One partner performs the technique while the other partner acts like a non-reactive, lifeless dummy for the first partner to practice on.
- Third, the instructor will call time and everyone will begin sparring. Finally after an hour of live sparring the class is over and everyone goes home.
Chances are that if you have ever had the opportunity to visit a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school these are the practices you have seen, but there is a problem: This way of training is as dead as my grandpa’s dentures.
There are better ways to train. I will give you one essential secret right now: It is not the techniques that make you good, it is the way in which you train the techniques that will make you good!
Your training strategy plays the biggest role in your success or failure in martial arts. It's the way you approach learning this martial art that makes the biggest difference.
